De la Villa presents those that have the greatest practical importance and explains and illustrates them with carefully selected examples. To show the patterns as clearly as possible, he mainly concentrates on positions in which both sides have just one piece. Presenting positions with
more pieces risks blurring the picture and making motifs less straightforward.

The fact that players think in patterns has an important side-effect: their endgame errors tend to repeat themselves. That’s why De la Villa has not just included examples from games of elite GM’s but also of amateurs. Errors are always instructive and working with this book will seriously reduce the number of typical mistakes you are prone to make.

Im fortgeschrittenen Teil begegnen uns u. a.

"Amateur to IM" ist sehr logisch aufgebaut.

Hawkins arbeitet sehr textbasiert, was mir als sehr positiv auffällt.

These 317 pages are highly instructive packed with topics which I have never seen before.

For example, you can learn a lot from your blitz games, although hardly anyone does, World elite blitz players have told Erik that they focus on concrete moves first in their fast games. Gradually, one’s awareness of concrete relevant moves and tactical possibilities must improve with consistent work.

Having a very tightly worked out opening repertoire is also very useful for blitz. Like Max Euwe, Erik Kislik does not see much in memorizing grandmaster games. In opening play, it is much better to focus on understanding. Try to guess the moves and understand why they were played! The whole idea of memorizing openings is usually counterproductive at lower levels.

Erik Kislik also explains we mostly remember openings due to their logic and strategic ideas. In the last ten years or more I have not read a single book on the openings. I did this on purpose, my idea being that I wanted to have my own opinion about the lines I was playing. Of course I have still worked with Veselin and some other strong players, but it is kind of ironic, because now I am writing such a book.

In this first volume of Cheparinov’s 1.d4! readers will find my own way of working on openings, and the way I analyze. Many of the lines and conclusions in this book are based not only on computer evaluation, but also on the practical point of view. Of course all the lines have been deeply analyzed by strong engines, and although I am sure they are not perfect, the most important thing is that all evaluations are based on my own understanding and knowledge of chess. I believe this book should be used as a starting point, from which to build progress in opening preparation.

In the book I reveal many new ideas and concepts. The first volume of the series focuses on 3.f3 against the Grünfeld and King’s Indian, two of the most popular openings against 1.d4. I tried to discuss all possible lines for Black after 3.f3, but of course focused on the most principled ones. Most of the lines are very double-edged.

I have revealed some very interesting options for Black as well. This is one of the things that I do in my opening preparation – I look at the openings for both sides. I believe this is very important, because it gives you a realistic view of things. Nevertheless, the content is cheerful and good-humoured, which is entirely in line with Manuel’s eternal optimism.” -- Werner Moller, ChessFellow

“Rarely I have read a chess book that radiated so much joy. The authors admire Bosboom and obviously had a lot of fun writing it. Beautiful games, fabulous moves, awful blunders. You will see lots of anecdotes about Manuel and drugs, Manuel being late, Manuel being much too late, Manuel the author, Manuel living creatively, Manuel and alcohol, Manuel playing way too many tournaments in a row, Manuel as a coach(!), Manuel and Buddha.” -- Renzo Verwer, author of ‘Bobby Fischer for Beginners’

“This book is a tribute to the most famous IM in the world – which GM doesn’t know him? – and provides you with insights on how to impose your will on your opponent with courage, creative play and always thinking ahead. In his first volume, he focuses on middlegames. Romain has carefully selected 496 positions, which arose in real games in the recent past. To obtain the best possible training result out of each position, he has separated the exercises into 11 different categories, covering both tactics and strategy, attack and defence. Romain gives you different instructions for each chapter, so you can improve your general thinking from varoius angles - exactly as you would face in your own games. This book is a fantastic training tool for any chessplayer to improve his level of chess thinking. Romain Edouard, with a highest rating of 2702, is part of the French National Team since 2011. As a teenager, he notably won a gold medal in the European U16 Championship in 2006, and silver medals in the Europe and World Championships under 18 in 2007.
